Devil of the Highlands Historical Highlands Lynsay Sands 9780061344770 Books

Lynsay Sands has written another fast paced, interesting, stay-up-all-night-to-read book! What wonderful, fully developed characters.

I love Evelinde because she's intelligent and resourceful and wants to make a place for herself within her new clan. Can she solve the previous deaths? Is she putting her own life at risk by trying to solve them? You'll just have to read it to see, but I can tell you that the culprit will be a big surprise to you!

Cullen has lived with being unjustly called the Devil of the Highlands for so long he's almost immune to it. Some people think he is responsible for the deaths of his father, uncle and first wife because he wanted to be Laird. Is that true? You will learn when you read the book.

I had to giggle at the description of the first time Cullen sees Evelinde. What a hoot -- of course he thought she was insane!

The step-mother is truly wicked and I really hated that we didn't get to see her have some punishment for all she'd done to Evelinde. I would have loved it if the brother had come home and kicked the wicked witch out or something.

Devil of the Highlands Historical Highlands Lynsay Sands 9780061344770 Books Reviews

This is my first Lynsay Sands book and I feel her work is a rip-off of Julie Garwood's highlander books. Those Julie Garwood books may have been appealing when they came out but they just don't hold up over time. This book was published in 2009 and the same old tropes are repeated here a for a new generation. First, the heroine is an idiot. She falls in the water and gets her dress wet, so what does she do? She takes off her dress and rides her mare back and forth while holding the dress aloft to dry. Okay, fine, maybe she's young and inexperienced. Has she never been swimming before? She didn't think that riding home immediately to dry off would be a better idea? Second, a stranger approaches her because of her crazy antics. Somehow they tumble to the ground together and while disentangling herself, her nipple find its way into his mouth? Are you serious? Then this stranger licks her nipple. That's sexual assault. Third, without knowing who he is at all, she randomly asks him if he knows of her intended husband, which happens to be this stranger . Why would she ask a random stranger, whom she just met, albeit one who just licked her breast, that? This is their "meet cute"? I could barely make my way through the rest of the book after this meeting of the hero and heroine. There were so many "smack my forehead in disbelief" moments like that. No, thank you.
Rating MA mature audience, graphic sex. Swoon-worthy love scenes and declarations of love.

I read this years ago and thought it was hilarious. I loved it. I decided to read it again so I could write a review. I was pleased to find it as hilarious as the first time I read it. The first encounter between our couple was an absolute scream. I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. It was so outrageous, so innocent and so funny. As I began to read, I was amazed that I remembered their encounter after all this time.

“Better a serpent than a stepmother!” –Euripides

How does a king rid himself of a troublesome woman? Edda was making a nuisance of herself in his court and Henry lll decided that his widowed baron needed a wife. Baron James d’Aumesbery was a good and faithful man and did as his king demanded… em… requested. James made the best of his marriage; however, his daughter Evelinde did not care for her stepmother and the feeling was mutual.

Evelinde’s brother Alexander had followed Prince Edward to the Crusades. When the king died, the prince returned home to take his place on the throne. Alexander was asked by his prince to remain in Tunis and continue in the fighting.

When the baron died, all pretense was gone. Edda despised Evelinde and made her life miserable. Because Edda didn’t like being the chatelaine of the castle, she made Evelinde take on the duties of running the keep. Evalinde managed the servants and kept the castle running smoothly. Everyone loved her as much as they had loved her mother.

Edda, hoping to rid herself of Evalinde, negotiated a marriage contract with the King. She especially requested a betrothal with the Devil of Donnachaidh, a notorious laird known for his cruelty. He was rumored to be responsible for the deaths of his laird and uncle, his own father who had become laird at the death of his brother, and finally, his wife. Edda was giddy with excitement at the prospects of Evalinde having a miserable life.

Cullen and Evalinde met in the meadow near the castle. She had been injured when she fell in the river. Her dress was torn and she was battered and bruised. Cullen had to carry her on his horse back to the castle. Edda thought the worst had befallen Evalinde at the hands of the Devil and couldn’t have been more thrilled. She was smiling broadly when she saw the shape Evalinde was in. Cullen was furious at her glee and at her demands that the marriage takes place immediately before he could change his mind. That was not all that she demanded happen immediately. What a witch.

“Never can true reconcilement grow where wounds of deadly hate have pierced so deep…” –John Milton, Paradise Lost

This was a fabulous story of redemption, finding the truth and recovering honor. Cullen, the Duncan, Laird of Donnachaidh, was a troubled man. So much pain in his life from the many deaths in his family and all were attributed to him. His name was synonymous with death. Whom could he trust? From where did the rumors originate?

The rest of the story was Evalinde arriving at Donnachaidh and her learning to navigate married life. Strange accidents began happening that put Evalinde’s life in danger. Cullen was beside himself trying to find the culprit behind the accidents. The fact Evalinde and Cullen had problems communicating hindered the progress of their relationship. His failure to talk to her or to relate crucial information also infuriated her. She spent a lot of time in her head as she tried to make sense of what was happening to her, and to try and understand her husband. She was thinking one way and Cullen was thinking another. In other words, the basics of marriage 101… communication.

The author did an excellent joy with clues that I completely overlooked and came to the wrong conclusion. Yep, I missed it big time. I was stunned and shocked as I had forgotten who the villain was. It was like reading it for the first time. It was amazing and so creative and I couldn’t put it down.

I am following this book with ‘The Hellion and the Highlander’ which is next in the series. This is Alexander returning from Tunis to find his father dead, his sister married to the Devil, and the castle in shambles due to Edda’s cruel behavior. Half of the servants had left and the other half was about to leave. I loved this story.
Honestly this was a pretty good book like most of Lynsay Sands books. It's funny, cute, and there's always a good mystery. I totally recommend it. The first part of this book was funny and creative.

However, I found Eve kind of annoying. She wants to please her husband too much, even setting out to solve the deaths of Cullin's uncle, father, and first wife. She does this knowing that it was what got the first wife killed--all so that her husband may fall "like" her more. Really? I'm sure as a great writer, Sands could've found a better way to solve the murders. With this, the ending felt a little rushed too. 😒

I also didn't like that Cullin sometimes forgot his first wife or that he was married before. He was with the woman for four years and felt only "affection" for her even though he liked her as much as he liked Eve...hum. Then he's with Eve for a month(?) and he loves her? I guess we can't help who we fall in love with, but I felt that this was really inconsistent and could have been better written.

Anyway, a good book, a little rushed at the end, and some inconsistencies, but a good book nonetheless.
